Wo ist das Handtuch?
Das Handtuch liegt auf dem Stuhl.

Short forms
Some preposition and article combinations are combined in a short form:

in + dem = im
an + dem = am

Verbs describing a position
The verbs liegen, stehen and sitzen describe a spatial area and nearly always require further explanation to answer the question Wo ...? This is why these verbs are often used with a two-case preposition that takes the dative.

Two-case prepositions with the accusative

The nine two-case prepositions in, an, unter, über, auf, vor, hinter, neben and zwischen are used with the accusative case when they give a direction and answer the question Wohin …? 

Wohin lege ich das Handtuch?
Ich lege das Handtuch auf den Stuhl.

Short forms

in + das = ins
an + das = ans

The verbs legen, stellen and setzen describe a spatial movement and almost always require

  • an accusative object
    Ich lege das Handtuch auf den Stuhl.
  • information that answers the question Wohin ...?
    Ich lege das Handtuch auf den Stuhl.
